Why I write…

“I am worth being heard, seen, and loved, but nobody hears, sees, or loves me.”

I’ve heard these words from many young adults I’ve mentored over the past 20 years. Having a strong desire for connection, they crave rich relationships… but seem to fall short of finding them. The rise of social media, surface-level relationships, broken families, and feeling alone in a sea of people—it’s overwhelming for most adults, let alone young adults. When they go to escape from it all in a book, they’re limited. It’s either wholesome and kind of cheesy or well-written but dark, with almost no in-between.

I decided to take pen to paper and change that.

My passion is for young people to be able to enjoy uplifting and well-done entertainment. Books that suck you in with page-turning plot lines and unforgettable characters—without compromising morals. Books I can confidently recommend and read with my three teenaged daughters and mentees—without the awkward conversations. Because I believe quality and values can co-exist…

…And that’s why the Good Heart Series was born.

I wrote it for the young people I mentor. I wrote it for my daughters, who are all teenagers now that we’re launching the series into the world. I wrote it for myself—for the fifteen-year-old me. I wrote it for moms, dads, daughters, sons, mentors, teachers.

I wrote it for you.

I genuinely desire to bring a breath of fresh air into your life, especially if you feel weighted down by dark entertainment. My hope is that Lyla’s light will reach into that. I pray that you will be thinking of this story and touched by it long after you turn the last page.

Like most authors, my life is infused into my work. I grew up hearing my parents' crazy adventures from when my dad was an undercover narcotics agent and met my mom when she worked at the DA's office. It made for some great stories and definitely shapes my writing. 

My love for vintage trinkets, day dresses, small towns, old luxuries, mysteries, making the most of every day, and empowering young adults to find their purpose…it all naturally finds its way into the pages of my novels. When writing, I love combining mystery with hope, raw emotion with elegance, and romance with innocence. 

Aside from writing, mentoring young adults is one of the most transformative parts of my life. Having people sit down with a good book and a mentor, parent—or anybody really—and read it together is a big reason I write. Connection with the book is one thing, but connection with others is where my heart lies.

Speaking of connection, I love connecting with the Lord each day, spending time with my husband and three amazing teenage daughters. We have a love for crazy adventures, scrapbooking, singing, and up-cycling anything we can get our hands on. There's something about taking broken things and bringing new life or purpose into them—a beauty in it, really. 

If I had to be known for just one thing… okay, maybe three… I want to be known for loving God, loving others, and bringing light into people’s lives. 

Remember, you are loved, and there is a purpose for your life.
